VFW POST 1350 HONOR GUARD
The North St.Paul VFW Honor Guard was assembled in 1955, The uniform was a khaki shirt, trousers, Post 1350 cap and the
VFW emblem on the left sleeve. The purpose was to be a casket Guard and rifle squad for a final tribute to our departed
Comrades. Then under the leadership of Robert Beringer the Honor Guard members became a Drill Team and entered in their first Mn.State Department VFW competition. They began practicing on the North St.Paul High School football field several days and hours each week. Their baptism as a Drill Team came in June of 1956 in Duluth MN. Where they took 3rd place in the competition. In 1958 they took 2nd place. In 1960, with new blue Jackets, red trousers, round hats with a blue top and a red wide band they became known as the 'Cavaliers'. With these new uniforms and a new-found excitement, they entered into the National VFW Drill Team Competition in Detroit Michigan. They took 9th place nationally. In 1961 they took 1st place in Ely, 1962 2nd place in Austin, 1963 1st place in Bemidji, 1964 1st place in St. Cloud, 1965 1st place in Grand Rapids, 1966 1st place in Mankato. In 1967 they made their last competition in Moorhead MN. Three other teams were entered but did not make an appearance.
The Honor Guard of Post 1350 makes several appearances during the year to schools, parades & cemeteries,
and continues to honor our comrades by standing casket guard and paying our last respects
to the deceased members of Arthur O. Haukland VFW Post 1350.
